Safety around Mahogany Lake looks a little different each season, but the goal never changes: helping our residents and their families stay safe on and around the water, year-round. Here's what to keep in mind this season.
🦺 Gear Up for the Water: Lifejacket Safety Matters
When on a watercraft, whether it's a boat, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard, users must wear a properly fitted lifejacket at all times. Accidents can happen quickly, and a lifejacket helps keep you afloat if you enter the water unexpectedly.
Before entering your watercraft, make sure your lifejacket is properly fitted: it should be snug with all straps secured. If it rides up when lifted, it's too loose and won't provide any help.
Don't rely on inflatable objects like pool floaties or toys, as they aren't rated for safety and can give a false sense of security in open water. Instead, use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) that is Transport Canada approved.
🏖️ Respect the Water: Safety Starts at the Shore
With summer now in full swing, safety starts before you ever enter the water. Safe swim areas enclosed by buoys are shallow and avoid drop-offs, deep water, and boat traffic. Swimming within these areas helps keep you and your family safe.
If you're with young children, keep them within arm's reach at all times near water, and avoid distractions like phones or long conversations while supervising a child.
🌩️ Watch for Weather
The lake can often look calm, but weather conditions can shift quickly. Wind, waves, and rain can change how safe the water is in a matter of minutes, so keep an eye on conditions throughout your visit.
If you see lightning or hear a rumble of thunder, leave the water immediately and do not re-enter for at least 30 minutes after the final flash or rumble. Lightning can travel miles to connect with a good conductor, and a big open lake is exactly that.
