Swim Distance Buoy System

Swimming in open water can feel very different from swimming in a pool. Distances are harder to judge and swimmers may not always realize how far they have travelled from shore until they begin to feel tired.

The Swim Distance Buoy System will provide visual reference points within the lake. Floating buoys positioned at set intervals will help swimmers to know the distance they have travelled and make informed decisions about when to turn back. This sytem supports safer open-water swimming by helping residents to swim within their abilities.

Key features will include:

Why Does This Matter?

Open water environments do not provide the same visual cues as controlled bodies of waters (i.e., pools). Depth, distance, and conditions can change, making it easier for swimmers to unintentionally travel farther than planned.

Providing distance markers helps swimmers better understand how far they are from shore and encourages them to plan their swim based on their personal ability and endurance.

This system supports:

The MHOA will also work with the Lifesaving Society (LSS) to align with recognized water safety education principles, which emphasize awareness, preparation, and personal responsibility in open-water environments.

Implementation & Rollout

The buoy markers will be installed at graduated distances from shore , providing clear visual reference points that help swimmers know the distance they have travelled. Key elements of the rollout will include:

The system is being developed as part of the MHOA’s ongoing water safety improvements, with updates being shared with our community as implementation progresses.

As the system evolves, additional educational resources may be introduced to help residents understand how to use the buoy markers effectively.

Possible enhancements include:

The goal of these new tools is to help residents better understand how to know the distance and swim within their abilities when enjoying Mahogany Lake.
