Lake ice will be maintained for skating once the ice thickness and quality can support our snow clearing equipment, typically sometime in late-December or early January. During the skating season the ice is regularly cleared and flooded to maintain as smooth a surface as possible. Lake ice quality is dependent on the weather and overall climate. The area is lit at night by two large flood lights during park hours.

Under the Responsible Pet Owner bylaw, pet owners must clean up after their pets, and violators can be ticketed. City of Calgary Animal Bylaw Enforcement can and will enforce the Pet Bylaws – please call 311 to file a complaint. MHOA always encourages responsible pet ownership, and there are several dog bag stations throughout the Wetlands! Please practice community stewardship by cleaning up after your animals, and educating your neighbors. Please note no pets are permitted within MHOA parks/facilities with exception to permitted Service animals, and MHOA Dog Patrol animals during registered/approved hours.

The Mahogany HOA uses different communication methods to keep our community members updated to when Mahogany Lake is safe for use.

  • Flags at Beaches. At both Main Beach and West Beach we use a coloured flag system:
    • Green = Go (Safe to use)
    • Red = No (Unsafe for use, do not enter)
  • Website/Social Media updates:
    • Website – Please check our Homepage in the bottom right hand corner where our flag status will be posted.
    • Social Media – Please check our Facebook and Instagram by liking/following to stay up to date.

This is something the MHOA has been monitoring and trying to determine as to what the issue is. We have consulted a number of linologistss and environmental science consultants as well as working with the University of Calgary as well as a number of other aquatic specialists.

Mahogany will not have an entry/exit from 88th Street. It was not on the original greater community plan and is not planned for the future. Hopewell Resedential (the developer) has lobbied the Province and the City to allow access and the main reason for denying the access is safety as the exit and access ramps from 88th Street to 196 Avenue do not allow enough distance between each to allow for an entry or exit to Mahogany between the two thoroughfares.

The Central Park project is anticipated that the west end section will start construction towards the end of summer 2022. The Eastern section is planned to start in 2023 with completion expected in 2024.

The process to assist with cross walk installation is through the CMCA and the City of Calgary. This is the process that the current flashing cross walk by West Beach followed for installation. The process needs to be community driven and the MHOA will support the community in it’s endeavour. Please reach out to the CMCA should you wish to join.

The MHOA doesn’t do fireworks. Unlike other lakes that are round in shape that creates a large enough barrier to be able to host fireworkes safely, the odd shape of Mahogany Lake does not allow for this as it poses a safety risk.
